This…This Too Shall Pass?

Earlier this week I was sent the package from BackBone that they were putting together for TMD and the inspirational frame ‘This Too Shall Pass’ jumped out at me. It’s a phrase I’ve heard before and it really got me thinking. There is the obvious meaning of ‘hold on, you’ll get through this and come out the other side…you always do’ but I thought about it in a few different contexts too.

It reminded me of a conversation with someone a long while ago who argued that every relationship, especially in SL, whether friends, family or intimate has an expiration date. I don’t agree with this sentiment. I agree that some relationships run their course or change their nature. Intimate relationships become long standing friendships. Long standing friendships can become intimate relationships but, I believe that, if you go into each interaction believing that there is a best before date stamped on it then you will become the harbinger of your own fate.

There are a lot of factors at play when it comes to whether people choose to, or want to, continue to be part of your life and vice versa but I certainly can’t believe that a pre-determined ‘use-by’ date is one of them.  I’ve made mistakes in this regard in the past but I would much rather believe that if you’re a good person, support, love and cherish your friends they will always want to be part of your world and if they don’t then they probably weren’t really the right friends in the first place.
