Sweet Pastel Pastimes

Giving credit where credit is due is a big thing for me. When I’m blogging I try hard to credit everything that appears in a photo, no matter how big or small. Sometimes I use older items and I it’s hard to find if the item is still for sale anywhere. Bloggers rely on the information in the creator’s profile a lot but I’ve often been surprised by how many creators do not keep that information up to date.

I was thinking about this after reading a post from fellow blogger Mericat Ireland. Mericat has recently returned to SL after a two year break and has started blogging again. She posted a blog in July featuring a necklace that she could find no sales information about. So she did what we would all do and marked it as No Longer Available.

Today she received this notecard from the creator:

“Maybe the sun has made you blind, because ” dreamers necklace ” is still available. If you do not put the link, it does not matter, but do not lie. I’ll refund you the 20ls of the necklace because I do not want you to be poorer than you already are. Have a nice day”

Meri responded explaining that she had gone to the effort of rezzing the item to find the creator name and had thoroughly and diligently checked the creator’s profile for clues…a marketplace link, store name, link to store location. The profile was devoid of any of this information.

Meri also added in a few choice words which she did with class cos she’s a sassy but classy chick!

I have so much to say about this. First up, if Meri did buy this necklace she’s your customer and perhaps you should talk to her as one. Also if she bought it, whilst it’s considered best practice to credit everything, she was under no obligation to credit it in her blog. Thirdly, what entitles the designer to do no work to promote her own store but verbally attack someone who is trying to? Fourth, even if you disregard all of the previous what on earth did you hope to achieve with talking to someone like that. Regardless of the cost, though I could argue that 20L$ item gives you even less right to do so.

I run a website, www.mainstoresl.com  and my team monitors Flickr for new releases, gifts etc that are available at mainstore locations. We regularly see amazing flyers and posters for beautiful items, sales, group gifts with zero information on where it is available. No slurl. No link. Not even ‘available at mainstore’. It beggars belief for me how even basic information sharing isn’t standard practice for a lot of designers. It’s Marketing 101 to tell your prospective customers where an item can be purchased from, preferably with a slurl to make it as easy as possible for them.

No one is perfect and mistakes happen. Bloggers will do their best to promote items to their readers but there are some designers and creators that seem to make it harder than it should be.

What I am blogging today:

I am blessed with the stores and creators that I get to work with and this photo is heavily featuring items from the current round of Collabor88.

Loft & Aria have a beautiful bedroom set that is available in a range of floral, solid and other textures, with options to change almost everything. The headboard is separate so can be used with other beds and the front, back and accent pillow can all be changed independently.

I’ve added this in with the Fancy Decor set from the same event. I laughed when I saw the name Caron. As most know my rl name is Karen and my grandmother, who passed away recently, spelled my name Caron on almost every birthday card my entire life. I love that the table, described as buffet table, really works in a bedroom setting and I think would work in bathrooms too.

there are more items from Collabor88 from Disorderly and Second Spaces as well as favourites from Ariskea (previously available at Kustom9).

  1. Eventhough I’m not into fashion and lifestyle and store blogging, I love ReadMeri blog and am following it dilligently. Same as yours. I can’t believe the audacity and chutzpah of that lazy store owner. Tssk tssk, some people’s kids. :/

  2. Gosh what a surprise this was! I’ve a small update. The seller replied to me and while she reaffirmed that saying her item was no longer available was a lie, she also confirmed I did buy the necklace in the past from marketplace. Now… Obviously I didn’t remember doing that or I’d simply have linked people up. And yes I guess I could have gone into marketplace and searched, but I did what most of us do which is to follow the item to its source and look for info. The seller says she doesn’t promote her items and isn’t worried about doing so. She also said she likes my blog… I have mixed feelings.

I replied and said that lying and not having information are different things. I wouldn’t leave anyone out on purpose, but yeah, it could have been dealt with better!

It’s a cute and quirky necklace and a bargain for 20 Lindens… Annyone wanting one can find it on marketplace 😜 x

    1. Yes, it’s made me think about it too… How far should I go to provide credit? Am I doing enough? Apparently not but as you say, I bought the item, I used it as an accessory… I guess I felt I did enough. 😨 It’s definitely food for thought. 🐷 sorry, can’t resist the pig emoji, so cute. X
