Threads

I am generally not, what they call in marketing circles, an early adopter. I’m also rarely the last to the party when it comes to new apps and social media platforms. I’m one of the vast majority of people who wait and see for a little while before taking the plunge to something new.

I’ve watched all the hype about hive and decided so far not to leap.

But, I couldn’t sign up fast enough for Threads.

If you have managed to avoid the toxic cesspit that is Twitter these days then you may not have even heard of Threads. Threads is Meta’s (the owner of Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram) alternative to Twitter and blasted it’s way onto the social media platform scene on Wednesday. By all accounts it majorly surpassed even their own expectations picking up an impressive 30 million users within 12 hours of launch and when I checked this morning it sits at 80 million users already. All this is bearing in mind that the app hasn’t even launched in EU countries yet.

Since Elon’s procurement of Twitter users have been crying out for an alternative with various options popping up but never seeming to gain any traction. Examples of these being mastadon and bluesky. Now it seems there is a credible, solid solution.

Like with any social media platform there are pro’s and cons. It’s a Meta platform so there are valid data mining concerns and there are strict community guidelines, which are no different to any of their other platforms. The biggest pro for me though…it’s driving Elon nuts!

At the moment you need an Instagram to sign up and you can quickly and easily copy over your profile and contacts within a few seconds. There is already a large and growing SL community active on the app too.
