Je Suis Paris

Only people that have never experienced online friendships think they aren’t real. They are certainly different from conventional friendships but only in the sense that the communication platforms used are different. A lot more written communication in the form of IM’s, emails etc and a lot of less verbal communication and occasionally face-to-face communication via cam or facetime and their equivalents. What those of us with online friendships know is that the bond between people is just as real as any real life friendship bonds.

Social media is adapting in the ways it provides services to people across the globe in communicating too and I was reminded of this when a friend marked themselves as ‘safe’ on Facebook after an earthquake in their area a few weeks ago. Whether it be natural disaster, or the all too common terrorist attacks that blight the modern world, there are now still ways to let your friends know you are safe.  With the attacks in Germany just before Christmas and it being the second anniversary of  the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices just yesterday these types of tools had been on my mind.

When discussing the intricacies of online friendships and relationships with a friend of mine a few weeks ago I was stuck by something they said. “We are the pioneers of this” he said, and it really got me thinking. I have been in Second Life since 2006 and we have truly led the way on the next stage of social online virtual reality. I have met quite a few people from Second Life in real life too though more so years ago when this was a newer platform than of recent years. There are a few good friends that are reasonably ‘local’ to me that I would hope to meet at some point or another too.  For me, that’s something positive to look forward to in 2017.
