I am going on vacation in a couple of months. Like most of us it will be the first vacation for a few years and we have decided to go back to a hotel that we visited for the first time 20 years ago when our children were small. It’s a family run, small hotel in Sorrento, Italy. I can’t wait!
One year we stumbled across the family having their Sunday dinner. There were 4 generations of the family there sat on a long table with the great Grandfather at the head of the table. We apologise for interrupting and turned ready to leave and the grandmother of the family jumped up. She didn’t speak English but she pointed at a table and chairs and then started to ferry food from the main table over to us. Bowls and plates of food would go up and down the long table then over to us. We were so warmly welcomed and included in the meal that it is a memory that has stayed, as clear as day, for 20 years.
When I put this scene together that memory was at the forefront of my memory, especially as the hotel that I go to is based inside an old orange grove. In the morning I can take a step outside of the room and literally pull a ripe orange off a tree and squeeze it for fresh orange juice.
