I’ve been itching to get a photo done for a while. I am still one of those people that is pro Flickr and, even though I post there, have never been super pro Primfeed. I read a post by Aria Christen on Facebook the other day talking about the moderation rules at Primfeed with some interest. It was a discussion around proving your work is not AI. Like most photographers in SL I use Photoshop – a product that has generative ai tools within it that I don’t (generally) use. This is where it gets blurry for me. Do I sometimes use the ai fix tool for a tiny patch of hair that isn’t sitting right in a pose? Yes. Previously I’d clone, patch, healing tool it but now I can fix that 10px x 10px patch in a second and I do use that. Does that make my photo AI enhanced because that 10px square of a 6000x4000px image used an ai tool fix? I also use a plug in called Luminar which also has AI tools in it that I generally don’t use but I might even be using without realising as these tools are now pervasive in almost all parts of the software.
What I don’t do is take a raw snap and run it through chatgpt or any other AI image creator with prompts. That is what most people are anti people using from what I see on social media. I’ve spent over an hour and a half editing this photo and I’m not gonna lie, if someone then moderates it saying it’s AI I’d be more than a bit miffed. Can I prove it? I’m in the same boat as Aria on this one. I don’t save the PSD’s, I flatten the image at the end at save as a png. Can I tell someone the exact processes I used in Camera Raw, how I colour graded it, how I created the curve, which actions I used, which overlays i used – Yes. Wil I? No. I just won’t use the platform again and I’ll stick with Flickr which I am, and always have been, happy with.
This takes me back to the first paragraph. I always considered Primfeed to be unnecessary, for me anyways. Primfeed was created to solve a problem that I never felt never really existed. Some, very vocal, people, didn’t want to pay (or couldn’t pay) for access to services, or stick to the TOS as free accounts. Or, didn’t stick to TOS as paying accounts. For the vast majority of us who purchased the services we wanted to e.g. Pro, and marked our content appropriately moderate, restricted etc we never had a problem. I had one issue when my account was marked moderate and guess what…it was my fault! That said, Flickr’s customer service is shockingingly bad and a pro for Primfeed is immediate access to a known Resident who can help you. One thing I will say as someone who has watched the growth of Primfeed is Luke is incredibly responsive to question, queries and complaints.
The “Flickr hates SL” rhetoric was loud and Primfeed offered a space just for SL Residents. But many of the same people flocked to their new photographic nirvana and strangely, they didn’t want to stick to the TOS there either! It’s almost like they were the issue not the platforms!
There are pros to Primfeed. I like that people have to use their names so people can’t pretend to be someone they are not. I like it’s SL only content, though so is my Flickr feed tbh because I only follow SL photographers. I am glad they have introduced albums and I love the new layout. I know Luke and others work hard on it. I’m just not invested in it enough to be bothered if something is mis moderated. I’ll just say goodbye and back away with grace.
