How to Lose Friends and Alienate People – A Facebook Story

Snapshot_004Facebook is a powerful tool for promotion for businesses, bloggers, personalities…you name it Facebook can be used to help promote it. Used incorrectly it can have quite the opposite effect than that which the user initially intended.

A lot of us refer to the facebook we use with our second life avatars as ‘SL Facebook’ and by that I mean the Second Life community, that runs into thousands, some using real life accounts but many using the account purely for Second Life activity.

My use of facebook on my ‘avatar account’ is threefold:

  1. Contact with my personal friends in Second Life.
  2. Contact with my co-workers, colleagues and contacts for business activities for MadPea.
  3. Contact and Promotion of my personal blog and additional activities I am involved in such as One Billion Rising and Home and Garden Expo.

In addition to my profile I have a page for the blog which people can like to keep up to date with posts and also for items I share from sponsors and other stores and creators.

Caitlin Tobias wrote a very explanative post a couple of months ago about the use of facebook pages and how they work and I would encourage people who have a blog or store to read it and to act on it too.

Using a page is a great way to invite friends, contacts and interested parties in following you on facebook and the key word there is INVITE.  There is a growing number of people using facebook groups to promote their businesses and adding their whole contact list to the group. The key difference between a group and a page is the person you are adding to the group doesn’t have a choice and generally people don’t like decisions about what they see and view on facebook being taken away from them.  I can count on one hand the number of people I would accept being added to a group by…they are my closest friends. If you are adding me to a group in order to try and promote your business, event or store to me then you have already lost a customer….and will probably lose a contact too. So now instead of being able to promote to me via your group and your profile you can’t promote to me at all….I’m going to take a wild guess that this wasn’t the desired outcome? Adding people to groups is a really bad idea and I think I speak for the majority of SL Facebook users when I say “Please stop it”

And now for something completely different. I’d like to wrap up my post today to say how wonderful it is to see Anna Darling Gibby (xanaxcontrol) back in Second Life after the personal hell she has been through over the last few months. I was delighted to receive a new item from cinphul, the hairpin featured in the pictures. Anna, you are a total inspiration and the epitome of strength in adversity. Sending much love your way ❤
