We’re on a Road to Nowhere

Or are we on a road to something else entirely? I made a couple of new friends this weekend in Second Life and it got me thinking about those important first IM’s. I, like many people, nearly always ignore just ‘hi’ or ‘hey’ ims but if a first IM intrigues me or asks a question I nearly always respond.

It got me thinking about the first messages I ever got from some of the people that are now the most important people in not only my SL but my RL too.  My friend Tackett didn’t realise he was having a problem loading profiles when he looked at mine and it was completely empty…he im’d me to ask me how I got my profile so empty. The road that IM took us on had its ups and downs but the ups have included hours of fun as gaming geeks in World of Warcraft and me visiting him in the US for a few days in 2014.

The early days of any relationship, whether they be friendships or of a more intimate nature, can be exciting as you get to know each other and find out if you have a similar sense of humour or interests in the same subjects but they all start with a first contact.  I could never have predicted from the first contacts with those closest to me where those friendships were going from that first message. I’m looking forward to seeing where these new friendships lead and how they develop and I’ll try to remember the first contact.
