I admit to being a bit of an ‘ostrich’ and burying my head in the sand especially when it comes to real life issues but it can also be true when dealing with uncomfortable situations in Second Life too. I can be prone to procrastination on real life tasks etc mainly because there is much more fun stuff to do in SL than filing bills and paperwork or cleaning the cupboard under the stairs for example. I suspect that is true for a lot of us though. Second Life becomes the place to go to keep the sunshine on my face and real life becomes the shadows I’m desperately trying to keep behind me.
That said, you can’t keep them behind you forever. They never really go away and those pesky shadows will slowly creep up on you and start to overwhelm. This week I decided to write a list of all the things I’ve been putting off in real life and making the decision to knock just one a day off the list. Some are quite minor things that will only take a minute or two to complete but I’ve put off because they aren’t ‘comfortable’ and some are larger tasks….like the filing or cupboard under the stairs. I started this on Monday and here we are on Thursday and so far so good. Tasks are getting done and I feel a million times better – not just in real life but when I am in SL too I’m not fretting about things left undone on the other side of the screen.
Ostrich’s don’t actually stick in their head in their sand and, for now at least, neither do I.
