It’s Roald Dahl’s birthday today – he would have been 100 years old and on the radio this morning they were discussing favourite parts of Roald Dahl books. Just a couple of weeks after Willy Wonka was in the news after the sad death of Gene Wilder it had me thinking about the film. I had actually read the book and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator before seeing the films and I remember being in awe of the film and how it had seemed to capture everything I saw in my own imagination through the book. I didn’t much care for any of the ‘naughty’ children, as expected except I always felt sorry for Augustus Gloop. I mean, you walk into that magical room full of edible, candy goodness and there it is…a chocolate river!!! I mean, who wouldn’t be diving into that. I’d be doing it now I’m a grown adult (though you could probably replace the chocolate with wine).
I haven’t read a Roald Dahl book in a long while and in fact books have been replaced with the Kindle in my house with all four occupants owning their own and usually found at night curled up somewhere reading.
