If I Knew Then What I Know Now

I was reminded while watching a TV programme a few days ago how our mind absorbs knowledge and how our memory reacts to that knowledge once it’s embedded in our brains. A year ago I started a new job in real part of which is being a Medical Secretary to a group of consultants in a Hospital. I’ve learnt a lot of new words…some short and some far longer than they need to be quite frankly. Atrial Fibrillation, antiphosphilipid, thromboprophylaxis to name just three. So I was watching this programme and two of those words came up in a scene. They stood out to me because I recognised them and it helped me understand what was occurring in the scene. It then got me thinking about all the times words are used in dramas like that, especially medical ones that we don’t understand. Do we even notice? I don’t think I’ve ever watched a medical drama and thought at the end of it that my enjoyment of it was lessened because I didn’t know the words they were using. Since then I’ve been trying to notice more when words just skip over my head to remember them and try and find out what they mean. I can’t imagine there will be much use for them in my every day vocabulary but it’s always fascinating to learn new things.
