It’s Beginning to Sound a Lot Like….

The radio at work is starting to ramp up the number of Christmas songs it plays per day. When I was growing up, and probably on through my 20’s,  the rush to be Christmas number 1 in the UK was huge news. There would be betting odds with all the bookies giving odds on whether Cliff Richard would be favourite again that year. There would be dozens of new Christmas singles released throughout December but with the changes to the way we consume and listen to music the excitement over the fight for the Christmas number one single has diminished. The impact is that less new Christmas songs are released to add to the essential Christmas playlist and it’s the same songs over and over again. I have my favourites, as do most people, with The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale of New York and Joni Mitchell’s River being two of my favourites but I really wish we could have some new classics-in-the-making released every year too.
