Sady and I were talking last week about the song Hollaback Girl. I’m a big fan of Gwen Stefani and No Doubt and I’ve blogged a couple of times inspired by her songs. One of my favourites is Spiderwebs. Anyway, Sady and I were talking about the meaning of the song Hollaback Girl which sent me off to good ole Google to dig some more.
Urban Dictionary quotes it as:
A “hollaback girl” is a girl who responds only with these verbal insults, without ever actually taking it to the next level and kicking some ass. In other words, a hollaback girl is all talk and no walk.
That definition seems to work with the lyrics of the song for sure:
I heard that you were talking shit
And you didn’t think that I would hear it
People hear you talking like that, getting everybody fired up
So I’m ready to attack, gonna lead the pack
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out
That’s right, put your pom-poms down, getting everybody fired up
However, as always with urban dictionary there is a difference of opinions with another person citing the definition as:
A girl that is willing to be treated like a doormat or booty call. She is a girl that will allow guys to do whatever they want with her and will just wait for them to ‘holla back’ at them.
Regardless of which is true, and while I’m absolutely 100% confident, based on experience, that some women can be both of these things, I love the song and always have. I’m definitely with Gwen on this one though…I ain’t no hollaback girl…either way.

See, I guessed it!!! Naturally I guessed the urban dictionary version. I’m with you though, neither one are something to be…doormats are for wiping feet, not relationships.
