I Rise

There’s a lot of love on the grid at the moment as our virtual, and real worlds, gear up for the ultimate day of love…Valentine’s Day.

However, there is something else happening on Valentine’s Day, also in both worlds….One Billion Rising.

What is One Billion Rising. The website for the event in the real world says:

“One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.”

In Second Life we mark the day with 24 hours of art, poetry, writings, music and dance, across four sims, as we rise against the injustices of women across the globe. This year’s theme, as last year’s, is Solidarity.

I’ve been involved with OBR in Second Life for three years now and so it was no surprise to me when the #MeToo movement uncovered so many women’s untold stories.  To be honest I think the 1 in 3 figure is low…nearly every woman I’ve ever met has a story to tell…often more than one.

But, OBR is not about sitting around feeling sorry for ourselves and hating on men. We love men…men are part of the event too as they support the women they love on their journeys. OBR is about sharing, or not if you don’t want to, support, dance and laughter and knowing that you are not alone and that millions of women across the globe are there to say I RISE alongside you.
