Tea and Cake and Because Callie Said So

I attended the BVN University session today where the tutor was the amazing Callie Hamelin. Now, I gotta admit, with no shame whatsoever, that I am a Callie fangirl.  I believe one of the secrets of an amazing blogger is how effortless they make things look. Before I knew Callie I could have assume that this girl just glided through life, SL and being an amazing photographer and blogger with ease, never considering for one minute that like an elegant swan, on a beautiful lake, her feet were going ten to the dozen under the water…just like the rest of us!!!

We both agreed yesterday that we do this thing, it goes like this:

Step One – Take hours building a scene

Step Two – Mess with windlights, tinker with items, change views for several more hours

Step Three – Take shot

Step Four – Spend hours editing shot

Step Five – Go back, change windlight, move more items…take another shot.

Step Six – Edit Shot again

Step Seven – Repeat Step Five and Six again

Step Eight – Finally Finish Photo

Step Nine – Make the mistake of looking on Flickr/Facebook, seeing someone else took a similar photo and did 1000 times better job than you think you did.

Step Ten – Trash Photo

So that’s kinda where I was yesterday after seeing Callie’s photo for Apple Fall and Nutmeg. So when we were talking about this phenomenon I said yeah, YOU are that person for me!!! We all have one…or more than one. She’s mine. I need a tee shirt that says “When I grow up I wanna be as good as Callie Hamelin”

I had a similar situation with Zedekiah. When we first started dating I could not take a photo of us. Everything I did was lame, in comparison to the quality of his photos. It still is tbh, I just don’t have his skill set and I know it. But, I had to get over the negativity about my own work that I felt when seeing his or I would have just given up blogging and photography and I enjoy it, I would have felt sad in doing so.

To quote one of the students, Tabitha, from yesterday “I’m never going to be XXXXX, or XXXX…but they are never going to be me either!” Words to live by. Yes, learn from people you admire. Talk to them, ask them questions and keep striving to improve but realise there are always going to be people you admire that you know are more adept or more talented or more skillful…or that you just damn well love their photos because they speak to you.
