Please, Don’t You Rock My Boat

I could sit on that bench, in that scene, for hours. A year ago I couldn’t have said that. I would struggle to sit still for a few minutes let alone hours. The people we spend time with have a way of influencing how we feel about things. I’ve found myself being far more open minded on a range of subjects over the last year or so. Taking time to just sit, chill, enjoy another persons company was something I never realised before that I avoided but I think it was at least a subconscious decision not to do it. My theory on why I avoided goes back to some of the self esteem and confidence issues I’ve had. Being alone with one person, just your thoughts and theirs is highly intimate. It means letting someone in to a space that you’ve normally kept busy and hurried and, yes, superfluous for the very reason that you want to avoid opening yourself up to the risk of that intimate, sometimes silent, space and time. But now, I could sit there for hours, with my special person and peel back the layers of discovery of each other and not fear the experience.
