It’s the first of the month but this ain’t no ordinary month…this is December! The first day of advent (sorta, it was actually the 29th November). But it’s the first day that many of us will be opening a little window on our advent calendars as we count down to Christmas Day. I’ve not had an advent calendar in real life for many years though I do still buy one for my grown up children because it’s part of what makes for a traditional Christmas in our house.
There was a suggestion in my house of going out for Christmas Dinner on the 25th this year and the person that suggested it was met with glares and scowls. I have a very set tradition of how I like Christmas Days and the thought of going out into a restaurant for what is the biggest family meal of the year just feels so alien to me.
When my children were very small I was always disappointed at how quickly everything was ‘over’ on Christmas Day so we put in place a routine for the day that spread out the gifts. The children (even though they are now 23 and 20) get to open their stocking items before breakfast. Then a few presents from under the tree after breakfast. No more presents can be opened until after lunch and a few must be saved for the evening. They tell me that when I first started doing it they hated it but now they appreciate how it makes the day last longer and they appreciate not rushing all the gift opening.
As we head into December the events will be coming thick and fast with some already opening their doors…namely Tannenbaum, faMESHed and The Arcade and some that started even earlier like SaNaRae. I’m hoping Santa will be bringing me a huge Christmas L$ bonus…because there’s a whole lot of spending will be going on!
