I’ve never broken a single New Years Resolution…because I’ve never made any.
Over the next few days there’ll be lots of posts on social media and articles in newspapers and magazines about New Year Resolutions. Our TV’s will be filled with commercials for slimming magazines or groups, nicotine replacements and gym memberships all trying to guilt trip us into spending out our hard earned cash on a promise we’ve made to ourselves that will last, on average, 2 weeks.
That said, it’s perfectly natural for the new year to be a time of reflection on the past 12 months and to consider our hopes and aspirations for the next 12. I’m thinking back now to how I had hoped 2015 would work out for me and it’s been a very different story to what I expected or hoped for myself and for my loved ones. Some experiences this year have been unexpected, wonderful surprises and those are the highlights of my year. I don’t want to dwell on the negatives other than to say thank you to the people that did me harm in the last 12 months, without them I wouldn’t have learned so much about myself and the dark side of others…all of which has made me a stronger, better person.
Perhaps that is all we should hope for at the end of each year. To finish it a better, more-rounded and stronger person than we began. To be able to look back and say “I learned something” and to take those learnings into the year ahead.
