What has been the single worst element of 2016? It’s hard for anyone to tell because there has been so much death, destruction and history making, regardless of your views, political decisions which will have an impact across the world for many years to come. Fake news websites have increased in number, their readerships have increased exponentially and the scary thing is, a vast number of those readers can’t tell the difference between satire and truth or politically motivated lies and responsible journalism. I rarely read a newspaper anymore. I trust only one news site for fact based reporting and if I want to know more on a subject, which I invariably do, I research. So many news stories leave me with the question ‘why?’ You can believe some things you read on the internet…but you do actually have to read, question and consider what the purpose or motivation for any particular article is.
We’ve all heard the phrase ‘if it’s too good to be true, it probably is’ well, the same goes in opposite too ‘if it’s too bad to be true then it probably isn’t’. On facebook on Christmas Day when the terribly sad news broke of the death of George Michael many people thought, or hoped, that it was a fake story. Of course, we know it wasn’t…once it’s on the BBC there’s really no chance that it’s untrue. I had read an article on the BBC Website a week or so before Christmas titled ‘Have more famous people died in 2016?‘. We’ve certainly all ‘felt’ like there have been more but do the facts and figures back that up. In short, the answer appears to be yes. The BBC, along with many other websites and news outlets have thousands of pre-prepared obituaries ready to use as soon as a death is announced and the article linked above looks at how many of them were used in comparison to previous years. At the time of publication of that article the upsurge in the first half of the year had led to an overall increase year on year and the second half of the year had slowed down a bit. I suspect that if they reproduced that article today after the deaths of Rick Parfitt, George Michael, Carrie Fisher, Liz Smith all in the last week that there wouldn’t be much difference between the first and second half of the year.
There are still a few days left of this ‘annus horribilis’ but I think everyone is agreed that 2017 can’t come soon enough.
About the Stuff:
MINIMAL has just released it’s very first clothing item at the round of Uber that opened on Christmas Day. The Vanity dress is, I assume, fitmesh or Maitreya rigged because it worked perfectly with my Maitreya body so please do demo first before purchasing. It comes in 6 colours to purchase individually but has a bonus colour included in the fatpack.
