Linden Lab goes Big Bully on Strawberry Singh

**UPDATE**  It seems that Linden Labs have reviewed their earlier decision and issued the above public apology to Berry. Credit where credit is due – this was a very good action on LL behalf!

Some days I wonder what to write about on the blog but today there is just one subject. As you may know, I am one of the founders of the Blogger & Vlogger Network which aims to promote the work of bloggers and vloggers across SL by providing them with information, support and networking opportunities. One of the best advocates for the group, since it’s inception, has been Strawberry Singh.  Berry has been blogging, and vlogging, about Second Life for over 10 years and is easily the most prolific and most recognised of SL’s bloggers. Her tutorials are particularly useful for new, intermediate and experienced residents of our virtual world. It’s fair to say that she has done far more to promote Second Life than any employee of Second Life. Linden Lab have never gotten the new user experience right in Second Life, which is why so many join and never stay in our world. The learning curve is steep and flawed and content created by vloggers like Strawberry is extremely useful to helping to promote SL as a platform to new users and for the resident community in general.

Today on her blog Berry shared the information that she had received a Trademark Complaint from Linden Lab, the company that owns and operates Second Life, over a new user experience tutorial that she created on her Youtube channel.  You can read the full details on Berry’s blog post.

The specific video in question showed how to sign up to SL and how to choose and select an avatar. Apparently, the fact that their homepage and the avatar page show their logo is the no-no.  If you’re sitting there reading this and thinking that’s just stupid! You’re right! It’s craziness. Berry’s YouTube Channel has over 10,000 subscribers.  The video in question was one of her most popular and viewed videos.  It’s literally like Linden Lab woke up yesterday and brainstormed ‘ways to alienate the community’ and set the officious Tia Linden off on a journey to achieve just that.  Perhaps Linden Lab should ask the thousands of content creators who are the backbone of the economy if they want Bloggers and Vloggers to have the ability to provide useful content for new and experienced residents? Do those content creators want new residents to be able to learn how to use SL and start to contribute to the economy quickly? Do those content creators want more residents or less?

I’m at a loss to explain, or even try to understand, what Linden Lab thought they would achieve by taking aim at the very people that support and promote their product to the masses. Perhaps instead of an IP Staffer they should invest in someone with some Public and/or Customer Relations experience…preferably with damage limitation experience.
