Where the City Sleeps

It’s all about the red and white at the moment. The title of the blog is a minor lyric from a Green Day song and there has been a huge campaign here in the UK for several months, to get Green Day’s American Idiot to number one in time for the visit of the Orange-a-tard to our shores this coming weekend. But then, something else happened. Quite unexpectedly, the England Football team did well at the World Cup and are currently just one game away from a final against either France or Belgium. The whole country is buoyed by this and, even though it never went away as a football song, Baddiel & Skinner’s Three Lions is climbing the charts, hitting the top spot in at least one chart and close to hitting it in the BBC chart too. The chorus of the song “it’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming…Football’s coming home’ was initially written for the European Championships that were held in England in 1996 but there has never been a football song since that has captured the nation as much as that one. So, even though lyrics like “30 years of hurt, never stopped me dreaming” are now irrelevant as its a whopping 52 years since football got even close to coming home.

The first semi final between France and Belgium is today with England playing tomorrow. I watched us go out in the Semi Final in 1990 and it’s just part of an England supporters psyche to not expect after all these years….but…there is just something about this team that gives you hope and confidence. One thing is for sure, we’ll never get a better chance than we have at the moment.
