Sometimes you have to take risks and if you’re strongly risk averse, as I am, that can take an incredible amount of courage. I like to be sure, and, not just a 90% sure…100% sure of almost everything in my life before I do something. Of course, when you’re that sure of something then it’s no longer a risk. I like sure things. But can anything really be a sure thing? They say that death and taxes are the only two certainties in life.
I’m pretty self aware of my flaws and this desire to be safe has, on some occasions, been one that has cost me dearly. I feel ’tilted’ when I am unsure and I get anxious and jittery. I don’t like feeling like that at all so I try to control it by being in safe situations and not stepping too far out of my comfort zone. Not everyone is happy to join me in my zone and sometimes someone needs you to meet them halfway out of it. In those circumstances I feel like a small bird, leaving a nest, taking a loo around but all too soon scuttling back to the safety of home at the first sign of trouble.
I surprised myself this week by stepping out into the world of anonymous messaging with the sarahah app that’s all the rage on Facebook. It allows users to leave a message, feedback or comment for someone without the restriction of knowing who sent it. Yes, there were trolls – I noticed a few people quoting messages that were obviously being spammed to people saying the same thing. I noticed other people getting some very mean messages too. I was overwhelmed with the positivity, kindness and love that I was shown through the messages though. I had one minorly mean message which, to be honest, I agreed with. If whoever it was is reading…I don’t like my voice either so we have something in common. Overall though it was a very positive experience and I’m glad I did it.
