But

Beware of the But. It’s the but that makes a mockery of everything that was said before it:

“I trust you but…”

“You know I would never talk bad about “insert name here” but…”

and my favourite of the week…

“I don’t want to be disrespectful but…”

Don’t get me wrong, I am sure I have said all of these at some point in time. However (great replacement for but btw), having spent some time talking to a friend about the very use of this word and the circumstances that people use it in.  I used to work with someone that would start every critical sentence about you or someone else with ‘You know I love you to bits but…”.  I mean, she didn’t at all, she was just someone I worked with. According to the way she talked she loved everyone…which was kinda odd as she really didn’t have a good word to say about anybody after the but.

There’s a huge amount of disrespect already in the online world shown towards people in general, designers,, event owners…pretty much anyone that sticks their head out above the parapet will come in for some kind of attack at some point during their online life. There is a mix of lack of respect an overblown sense of entitlement to whatever you want that fuels a lot of it in my opinion.

Since the conversation with a friend, I’ve tried to be more mindful of when I use the word but and whether I am using it to soften, or excuse, a behaviour.
