The Orangery

When my children were younger we holidayed for several years running at a small, family-run, hotel complex in Sorrento, Italy. the hotel itself only had around 8 rooms but there were cabins scattered around the complex. The hotel complex had originally been an orange and lemon grove and most of the cabins where shady with orange trees overhanging them. Our first morning we awoke to the sound of an orange falling off the tree over our cabin and rolling down the sloped roof. As we emerged from the cabin the owner of the hotel said good morning, then pointed to the trees and said ‘help yourself’. Our first morning in Italy, and every morning after, we’d have oranges from the tree with breakfast. I’m pretty sure that’s part of what made me fall in love with Italy and particularly the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento area.
