My Mums favourite visits to London were to see Phantom of the Opera. She was lucky enough to see it in the mid 80’s with Michael Crawford in the lead role and she played the soundtrack at home often. As a young girl I’m not sure I appreciated the ‘music of the night’ quite as much as I enjoy it now. My musical tastes have certainly developed over the last 30 years to the point where I can find something I like in almost all types and genres of music.
For a lot of us in the mid 80’s the biggest shock was finding out that ‘Frank Spencer’ could sing! Michael Crawford had been the star of a sitcom about a hapless manchild, married to the long suffering Betty. Everything he did went wrong and Crawford was famous for doing his own stunts…some of which were crazy for their time. His catchphrase of ‘Oooooh Betty’ was synonymous with him and I remember being quite surprised when I heard he was going to be taking a super serious part in musical theatre. I think a few others were surprised too. Of course, the rest is history with Crawford winning an Olivier and Tony award in the opening years in the UK and the States respectively and the success and longevity of Phantom being sealed with what turned out to be exceptional casting.
The Phantom’s Opera set from Fancy Decor at The Arcade this month is truly stunning and obviously created with much love and thought to the original stageshow production.
